Destin and 30A Facts for Renters
Quick answer
Four Florida state parks with Gulf beaches sit in or near our Destin and 30A area: Henderson Beach in Destin, plus Grayton Beach, Topsail Hill Preserve and Deer Lake along County Road 30A. Each lists hours of 8 a.m. to sunset. Henderson Beach needs a day-use reservation to enter by car, and Grayton Beach and Deer Lake say they can close for hours when they reach capacity. Walton County and the City of Destin each publish their own beach rules, summarized below. All pages were checked on October 30, 2026. On BnB Search, the Destin and 30A vacation rentals hub lists 260 places, 191 of them individual stays. Sources are linked at the end.
State parks with Gulf beaches (Florida State Parks)
- Henderson Beach State Park (Destin): 8 a.m. to sunset, 365 days a year, $6 per vehicle. Since May 15, 2026, everyone entering by vehicle needs a day-use reservation, including annual passholders. Reservations open up to 60 days ahead, and the entry fee is paid when you reserve. Pedestrians and bicyclists do not need a reservation and pay on arrival. The park describes 30-foot dunes and 60 campsites connected to the beach by boardwalk.
- Grayton Beach State Park (Santa Rosa Beach, on 30A): 8 a.m. to sunset, $5 per vehicle, nearly 2,000 acres with 4 miles of trails and Western Lake for paddling. The park says it frequently reaches capacity and may close to day visitors, including pedestrians and bicyclists, for several hours at a time.
- Topsail Hill Preserve State Park (Santa Rosa Beach, on 30A): 8 a.m. to sunset, $6 per vehicle, with 3.2 miles of beach and more than 10 miles of trails, according to the park. A notice dated October 30, 2026 says the park is open for day use but all overnight accommodations are closed due to Hurricane Isaias. Since September 16, 2026 the main beach boardwalk has been closed for construction; the park points visitors to the beach access path next to the tram station.
- Deer Lake State Park (on 30A): 8 a.m. to sunset. Fees go in an honor box and correct change is required: $3 per vehicle with 2 to 8 passengers, and $2 for pedestrians, bicyclists and extra passengers. Like Grayton Beach, the park says it may close for several hours when it reaches capacity. A boardwalk crosses the dunes to the beach.
Why this matters for renters: if your rental is not on the beach, these parks are public ways to reach one, but plan around the Henderson Beach reservation and the capacity closures at Grayton Beach and Deer Lake. Notices change, so check the park page the day you go.
Walton County public beach rules
Walton County’s Code Compliance FAQ covers its public beaches. Open your rental’s map pin to see whether you are in Walton County; these rules are the county’s, not the City of Destin’s.
- Leave no trace: personal items may not be left on the beach, dunes or toe of the dune from one hour after sunset to one hour after sunrise without a county permit.
- Double red flags: the water is closed. The county lists a $525 fine, and says boogie boards may not be used then either.
- Holes and sand: holes may be no larger than 3 feet by 3 feet and 2 feet deep and must be filled in; metal shovels are not allowed; beach sand may not be taken. The county lists $125 fines for these.
- Tents and umbrellas: tents on county beaches may be no larger than 10 by 10 feet, must stay on the upland half of the beach except at Grayton Beach, and need a 4-foot walkway between them. Umbrellas may be no larger than 8 by 8 feet.
- Glass and grills: no glass or ceramic containers. No charcoal grills; small propane grills with a 1-pound cylinder and under 225 square inches of cooking surface are allowed.
- Dogs: only Walton County property owners and permanent residents can get a dog-on-the-beach permit, so a vacation rental guest cannot. Service animals are allowed.
- Parking: no overnight parking in county beach access lots.
City of Destin beach rules and beach parks
The City of Destin’s beach information page and FAQ say:
- Not allowed on the beaches: pets, fires, fireworks, glass, littering and vehicles. Overnight camping on the beach is not allowed.
- Items left overnight are removed by city staff and kept for about a week; the city says to call (850) 837-4242 to arrange pickup.
- City beach parks: June White Decker (over 70 parking spaces), Norriego Point (27 spaces), Shore at Crystal (9 spaces) and Tarpon Beach (over 340 feet of beachfront). James Lee Park is a county beach park near the Walton/Okaloosa County line with over 100 spaces.
- Parking: on the city parking page, visitors pay $20 per 4 hours for beach parking, and overnight parking is prohibited in all city lots.
- Flags: the city says not to go in the water on a double red flag, and that Destin beach flags are managed by the Destin Fire Control District.
