Destin and 30A Beach Tent Rules
A first trip to Destin and Scenic Highway 30A is an Emerald Coast house or condo week, not a ranking of beaches. Destin and 30A vacation rentals on BnB Search are a free directory. Shortlist on the map, then book on the property site. The neighborhood guide is the base map. The family guide is beds and logistics. This page is the checklist those posts do not replace. Quick answer
Three governments set beach rules around Destin and 30A: the City of Destin, Okaloosa County and Walton County. Okaloosa and Walton counties both limit beach tents to 10 by 10 feet. Walton County also limits umbrellas to 8 by 8 feet and keeps tents on the upland half of the beach. None of the three lets you leave gear on the beach overnight. We read each rule below on the city’s or county’s own pages or ordinances on October 18, 2026. Check which jurisdiction your rental’s beach falls in.
City of Destin
- Pop-up canopies: the city does not ban pop-up canopies on beaches inside city limits. It notes that canopies left out overnight can get in the way of beach cleaning and sea turtle nesting.
- Overnight: city staff remove items left on the beach overnight. They are kept for about a week at the city’s Public Services Maintenance Yard, and you can call (850) 837-4242 to arrange pickup. The city’s beach information page says items left overnight at its beach trails are removed under city ordinance.
- Also not allowed: overnight camping, vehicles and glass on the beach.

Okaloosa County beaches
These rules apply on beaches in unincorporated Okaloosa County.
- Tent size: tents and beach equipment can be no larger than 10 by 10 feet, counting flaps, extensions, tie-downs and sandbags. You can’t join tents together to get around the limit. Larger setups need a beach permit from the County Parks Division (Ordinance 2024-05, adopted April 16, 2024).
- Holes: someone must stay with any hole, it must be filled before you leave, and it can be no larger than 3 by 3 feet and no deeper than 2 feet (same ordinance).
- Overnight: personal property can’t be left on the beach overnight, or anywhere it gets in the way of beach cleaning, nesting turtles, emergency vehicles or lifeguards’ view of the water. Nothing may be placed or left on the beach from 12:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Central Time (same ordinance). The county’s tourism site says county staff remove items left overnight.

Walton County beaches, including 30A
These sections apply on beaches Walton County owns, leases or maintains. The ordinance names Grayton Beach and Inlet Beach.
- Leave No Trace: it is unlawful to leave personal property on the beach from one hour after sunset to one hour after sunrise without a county permit (Ordinance 2024-21).
- Tent size and placement: a tent’s total footprint can be no larger than 10 by 10 feet, including strings, bags, straps and legs. Tents must stay on the upland half of the beach, except at Grayton Beach, with a 4-foot walkway between tents.
- Umbrellas: no larger than 8 by 8 feet.
- Dune setback: keep beach equipment at least 15 feet from the seawall, the toe of the dune or the line of permanent dune vegetation, and leave the wet sand clear for people to walk.
- Tools: beachgoers may not use or carry steel-blade shovels or other metal digging tools.
The tent, umbrella, setback and tool rules come from Ordinance 2025-22, adopted November 24, 2025. Sources: Walton County: Code Compliance (Leave No Trace) and Walton County Ordinance 2025-22 (PDF).
