NC Mountains: What the 13 Area Filters Cover

Quick answer

The hub has 13 area filters, a mix of counties and towns, and none holds more than six pins. This page groups them by part of the region. It is a regional guide: it does not cover county or town rental rules. The North Carolina Mountains hub lists 39 places on its map, 36 of them individual stays. This page does not rank areas. Sources are linked at the end.

The 13 area filters on the map

These counts come from BnB Search's own directory data, read October 30, 2026. They change when listings are added or removed.

An area tag is a broad label. Open the map pin to see exactly where a listing is.

Buncombe County, its towns, Madison and Haywood

Buncombe County has 6 pins, Black Mountain 5, Weaverville 1, Madison County 5 and Haywood County 1. Black Mountain and Weaverville are separate filters from Buncombe County, so check all three.

The National Park Service road status page, updated 7:30 a.m. October 29, 2026, lists every Blue Ridge Parkway section from NC 128 at Mount Mitchell State Park south past Craggy Gardens, the Folk Art Center and Park Headquarters to Brevard Road as open or ungated. The page says ungated sections are open except in emergencies, and the status can change during the day. Source: NPS Blue Ridge Parkway road status.

Mount Mitchell and Lake James side: Yancey, Mitchell and McDowell

Yancey County has 4 pins, Mitchell County 2 and McDowell County 5. 1 McDowell stay title names Lake James.

NC State Parks says Mount Mitchell State Park is in Yancey County, 30 miles northeast of Asheville. At 6,684 feet it is the highest point east of the Mississippi. Day use is free, and November to February hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The park warns of frequent and prolonged winter closures, because its main access is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which the NPS closes when the road is icy. The same NPS status page lists the Parkway closed from NC 80 to Mount Mitchell State Park (mileposts 344.2 to 355.3) for Helene-related damage, with recreation of any kind prohibited, and hiking prohibited at Crabtree Falls. Source: NPS Blue Ridge Parkway road status.

Lake James State Park is in Burke and McDowell counties, 50 miles northeast of Asheville. Its page lists the swim beach closed, boat rentals unavailable and the East Wimba Trail on long-term closure after Hurricane Helene. Day use is free except boat rentals and swim passes. High Country: Avery County, Boone and Watauga County

Avery County has 1 pin, Boone 3 and Watauga County 1. By their names, the Boone and Watauga County pins are rental and property companies rather than single homes, so open each one.

NC State Parks puts Elk Knob State Park in Watauga County, 11 miles north of Boone, with a 5,520-foot summit. Day use is free and November to February hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. In winter, about 1 mile of ungroomed trail is open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing if you bring your own gear. Part of the Backcountry Trail is still closed after Hurricane Helene. Source: NC State Parks, Elk Knob.

Lake Lure and Chimney Rock

Lake Lure has 4 pins and Chimney Rock 1 on this hub. The Lake Lure and Chimney Rock hub has many more listings, and the Lake Lure area guide covers both filters there.

How to shortlist

  1. Pick the part of the region first, then the county or town filter.
  2. Open the pin. Several filters hold only one or two listings, and some pins are companies.
  3. Check the NPS road status page before planning a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
  4. Check the state park page before a winter visit to Mount Mitchell or Elk Knob.
  5. Book on the site linked from the listing.
