Things to Do Near North Carolina Mountains Rentals (Parks and Scenic Drives)
Quick answer
Near the cabins in our North Carolina Mountains directory, NC State Parks runs Mount Mitchell State Park (the highest point east of the Mississippi River, with a Burnsville address), Lake James State Park (near Nebo, in Burke and McDowell counties) and Elk Knob State Park (11 miles north of Boone). None of the three charges a day-use entry fee (Lake James charges for boat rentals and swim passes). The Town of Black Mountain runs Lake Tomahawk Park, and the National Park Service manages the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hurricane Helene closures were still in place on some trails and Parkway sections when we checked on October 25, 2026, so check each official page before you go. On BnB Search, the North Carolina Mountains vacation rentals hub lists 39 places. Sources are linked at the end.

Mount Mitchell State Park
NC State Parks says the park is in Yancey County, 30 miles northeast of Asheville, at 2388 N.C. 128, Burnsville. At 6,684 feet, Mount Mitchell is the highest point east of the Mississippi River, and an observation deck gives mountain views on a clear day. - Park hours in October are 7 AM to 8 PM; November to February hours are 7 AM to 6 PM. The park says it may have frequent and long closures in winter, because the Blue Ridge Parkway, its main access, closes when the road is icy.
- The summit restaurant is closed for the year. The concession stand is open daily; the park page’s hours table lists 11 AM to 4 PM, and a notice on the same page says 10 AM to 5 PM (rechecked October 30, 2026).
- Pets on a leash no longer than 6 feet; not allowed inside buildings.
Lake James State Park
NC State Parks says Lake James State Park is in Burke and McDowell counties, 50 miles northeast of Asheville, with two areas to reach the lake: the Paddy’s Creek access (2229 Lake James State Park Road, Nebo, with the visitor center) and the Catawba River access. It lists hiking (22 miles at Paddy’s Creek, 4.5 miles at Catawba River), 14 miles of bike trails at Paddy’s Creek, paddling, fishing and swimming at Paddy’s Creek only.
