About this data
These are NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) 1991–2020 U.S. Climate Normals for the Forest City 8 W station (ID USC00313152), elevation 259 m (about 849 ft), about 15 miles southeast of the middle of our Lake Lure and Chimney Rock listing pins. NOAA computed the high-temperature normal from 15–16 years of data, the low from 11–15 and precipitation from 14–16; its completeness flags for these values are R ("S" standard, "R" representative, as defined in NOAA's documentation). Normals are 30-year averages, not a forecast: any given week can be much warmer, colder, wetter or drier.
The station is about 8 miles west of Forest City, per its NOAA name. The Lake Lure 2 station is closer, but NOAA flags its temperature normals as estimated, so we do not use them. Swannanoa 2 SSE is also slightly closer, but NOAA lists it at about 4,320 ft, against about 1,040 ft for the Lake Lure 2 station and about 849 ft for Forest City 8 W.
NOAA does not publish a complete monthly snowfall normal for this station, so this guide does not list snowfall.
Packing notes from the numbers

- Average lows are between 33°F and 45°F in March, April and November, so a jacket is useful after dark.
- Average precipitation is 4 inches or more in January, March, April, June, July, August, September and December. A rain jacket or umbrella is worth packing.

Before you book a Lake Lure and Chimney Rock rental
- For a stay in January, February and December, ask the host how the driveway and access road are cleared after snow or ice, and whether a 4WD or AWD vehicle is recommended.
- Ask whether the heating system, hot tub and any pipes are winterized or kept running, and who to call if the heat fails.
- For June, July and August, when average highs are 85°F or more, confirm the rental has air conditioning in the bedrooms, not just the living area.
- For January, March, April, June, July, August, September and December, read the cancellation and weather policy before you book, and plan an indoor backup for rainy days.
- Check a current forecast from the National Weather Service (weather.gov) a few days before you travel; normals do not replace a forecast.
