Wisconsin Dells Vacation Rental Tips
Part of the Dells area is the Village of Lake Delton, which licenses short-term rentals as Tourist Rooming Houses. Its rules set the group size and limit where grills can go. Use Wisconsin Dells rentals to shortlist, then book on the property site. This page does not replace the first-time checklist, facts for renters, or the family guide.
Quick answer
In Lake Delton, a rental sleeps at most 2 people per bedroom plus 2, and grills may not be used on decks or balconies or within 10 feet of the building. Village Code Chapter 35 (as amended by Ord. 20-005, read October 30, 2026) also requires the permit to be posted inside the main entrance door. We do not rank managers or invent fees.
Village of Lake Delton rules that affect guests
From Lake Delton Municipal Code Chapter 35, Tourist Rooming House:
- Occupancy. Maximum occupancy is 2 people per bedroom plus 2. For example, a 2-bedroom unit sleeps 6.
- Parking. Each rental needs designated on-site, off-street parking sized to its maximum occupancy. In condos, occupancy is tied to the unit’s reserved spaces.
- Grills. No hibachi, gas or charcoal grill on a balcony or deck, under an overhang, or within 10 feet of any structure.
- Fireplaces. Usable stoves and fireplaces need posted instructions; ones without a current inspection certificate are blocked off.
- Safety gear. Each unit has smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and a fire extinguisher, with a sign if the extinguisher is not in plain view.
- Permit and code of conduct. The permit is displayed inside the main entrance door, and the owner or manager gives guests a code of conduct.
- Noise. Three or more verified noise or calls-for-service complaints in one month can suspend a unit’s permit for at least 30 days.
The City of Wisconsin Dells and the surrounding towns have their own rules. Read the pin and the booking site.
