Smoky Mountains Vacation Rental Tips
Smoky Mountains cabins sit in bear country, and the City of Gatlinburg has written trash and bear rules into its code. Use Smoky Mountains rentals to shortlist, then book on the property site. This page does not replace the first-time checklist, area facts for renters, or the neighborhood guide.
Quick answer
Never feed bears, and put trash only in the animal-resistant can or dumpster. City of Gatlinburg pages (read October 30, 2026) say feeding bears is illegal inside city limits and that properties with a City Tourist Residency Permit are in the animal-resistant container zone. We do not rank managers or invent fees.
City of Gatlinburg rules that affect guests
From City of Gatlinburg notices on the container zone expansion (December 9, 2024) and bear safety (July 12, 2024):
- Do not feed bears. Feeding bears is illegal inside Gatlinburg city limits and the North Chalet Village subdivision, under TWRA Proclamation 00-17. A violation is a Class C misdemeanor.
- Rental homes are in the container zone. Ordinance 2623 added every property holding a City Tourist Residency Permit to the animal-resistant container zone, with compliance due by June 30, 2025.
- Secure the trash. Unsecured trash or misuse of the animal-resistant containers is a City ordinance violation with a $50 fine plus court costs. Trash kept inside a closed house or building that animals cannot enter is exempt.
- Drop-off. The Heiden Drive collection center takes garbage daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- BearWise basics. The City asks visitors to secure food and garbage, never leave pet food outside, and clean and store grills.
Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, Wears Valley and other cabins outside Gatlinburg city limits follow their own city or Sevier County rules. Read the pin and the booking site.
