Smoky Mountains Holiday Season 2026: Thanksgiving to New Year’s
Late November through New Year’s is one of the busiest stretches of the year around Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. The city light shows are up, there is a downtown parade and a New Year’s Eve party, and some park roads close for winter. Every date and price below comes from the city, visitor bureau or National Park Service page that publishes it, read on October 30, 2026. Where a 2026 date is not published yet, we say so. Shortlist cabins on Smoky Mountains rentals, then book on the property site. For a broader list, see things to do, and for cold-weather prep, the winter packing guide.
Quick answer
Pigeon Forge Winterfest lights run November 6, 2026 to January 31, 2027. The Gatlinburg Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade is Friday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. Gatlinburg’s free New Year’s Eve celebration is December 31 at the Space Needle. Inside the national park, Kuwohi Road and the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail are open through November 29. Any car parked in the park for more than 15 minutes needs a paper parking tag ($5 a day). We do not invent ticket prices, show times or crowd forecasts.

Gatlinburg: Winter Magic, the Christmas parade and New Year’s Eve
- Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade: Friday, December 4, 2026, 7:30 p.m. It runs from Baskins Creek Bypass to Traffic Light #3, then south on the Parkway to Traffic Light #10. Grandstand seats are $50 per person, with seating from 5:30 p.m. The Gatlinburg Convention & Visitors Bureau’s parade page lists lane changes from 4:30 p.m. and a full route closure around 7 p.m. Plan the drive back to your cabin around that.
- New Year’s Eve Celebration and Ball Drop: Thursday, December 31, 2026, at the Gatlinburg Space Needle, and free, per the bureau’s event listing. The 2026 performers and start time were not posted when we checked.
- Winter Magic lights: the bureau’s Winter Magic page describes the self-guided lights tour and the Visit Gatlinburg app. It did not list 2026–27 start and end dates when we checked, so we do not give any.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park in late fall and winter
- Seasonal roads: the park’s seasonal road schedule lists Kuwohi Road (formerly Clingmans Dome Road) as open April 1 to November 29. The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is open April 17 to November 29. After that weekend, plan on neither road for a December trip. Both can also close earlier for snow or ice.
- Year-round roads: Newfound Gap Road (US 441), Little River Road and the Cades Cove Loop Road stay open all year, weather permitting. Cades Cove Loop is open sunrise to sunset.
- Parking tags: from the park’s fees page, any vehicle parked in the park for more than 15 minutes needs a tag. Tags cost $5 for a day, $15 for a week or $40 for a year. You must display the paper tag, because digital copies are not accepted. Most trailheads have no tag machine, so buy one online or at a park location before you head out.
