Saugatuck First-Time Visitor Checklist
A first Saugatuck trip is an order of checks, not a ranking of towns. Saugatuck vacation rentals on BnB Search are a free directory of cottages and cabins in Saugatuck and Douglas. Shortlist on the map, then book on the property site. The facts for renters page covers park shoreline and dune safety. This page is the first-trip checklist. It does not replace that page, Door County vs Saugatuck, things to do, or where to eat.
Quick answer
Filter the hub badge, then read the pin. The live directory areas are Saugatuck, Douglas, and Fennville. “Unknown” is not a town. Oval Beach Park is open year-round on the City of Saugatuck page (read October 26, 2026); that page also lists seasonal parking hours Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with a $15 day pass sold at the beach. Saugatuck Dunes State Park has 2.5 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and requires a Michigan Recreation Passport for vehicle entry (Michigan DNR park page, read October 26, 2026). We do not rank a base.
Three labels, in the order you click them
- Decide whether the pin’s badge is Saugatuck, Douglas, or Fennville. If it is not, you are in Unknown or looking at a name that is not a button.
- Do not treat the badge list as a town writeup. Read the pin for the address and the map location.
- A hub label is not a promise of Oval Beach walking distance or a private beach. Check the listing and the map before you deposit.
- If you already know the manager or inn, leave the town filter and open the companies guide or the directory lodging list below.
Oval Beach and Mt. Baldhead (City of Saugatuck)
- Oval Beach. Address 690 Perryman St. The city page says the park is open year-round. Seasonal beach operations and paid parking run Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Day pass $15 (sold at the beach); season pass $75; city taxpayer pass $20 at City Hall. No dogs from Memorial Day weekend through September 30. No lifeguards; swim at your own risk. No alcohol, smoking, fires, or personal grilling. Stay off dune grass and on trails.
- Mt. Baldhead Park. The city page describes 303 wooden steps climbing about 250 feet to an observation deck, with the park closing at 10 p.m. and no dogs. Stay on stairs and trails.
Saugatuck Dunes State Park (Michigan DNR)
The DNR page lists about 2.5 miles of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline, coastal dunes, and 13 miles of trails, with the Beach Trail marked as a 0.75-mile one-way route to the lake. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry. Pets are allowed along the shoreline on a six-foot leash. The page warns not to dig into a vertical sand dune because it can collapse. Confirm hours and passport rules on the DNR page before you go.
What to confirm before you pay
- Which hub badge matches the pin: Saugatuck, Douglas, or Fennville.
- Whether you need a Recreation Passport for state-park parking, separate from Oval Beach city parking passes.
- Dog rules: Oval Beach bans dogs Memorial Day weekend through September 30; the state park allows leashed pets on the shoreline. Read each site, not the hub badge.
- Season and hours for Oval Beach paid parking if you visit in summer.
- Airport and drive: see Grand Rapids Airport for Saugatuck.
Companies are not towns
A company or inn pin is not the same as a town filter. Compare managers only after you know which badge matches the stay.
How this differs from the other Saugatuck pages
Facts for renters go deeper on dunes and shoreline safety. Things to do and restaurants are separate sourced lists. Family cottages and large-group guides help once you know the filter. This page is only the first-trip order of checks.
If a feature is a must-have, build your shortlist from this Saugatuck and Douglas page, which lists only rentals whose own listing title or website mentions that feature: Saugatuck and Douglas rentals with a hot tub (11).
FAQ
Which Saugatuck area should I pick?
We do not publish an area ranking. Use Saugatuck, Douglas, or Fennville to match the pin, then read the listing.
Is Douglas the same filter as Saugatuck?
No. Both are hub buttons.
Do I need a Recreation Passport for Oval Beach?
Oval Beach is a City of Saugatuck park with its own parking passes. The Michigan Recreation Passport is what the DNR requires for vehicle entry at Saugatuck Dunes State Park. They are different places.
Are dogs allowed at Oval Beach?
The city page says no dogs from Memorial Day weekend through September 30. Confirm on the city page for your dates.
Does BnB Search book the stay?
No. Compare on the hub, then finish on the site linked from the listing.
