Hilton Head Winter Packing for a Rental Week
Hilton Head is mild in winter, but the rules change with the season. The town’s beach rules for dogs are looser from October through March, and the wildlife refuge by the bridges has no water or restrooms. This guide helps you choose a pin on the Hilton Head hub, then book on the property’s own site. It does not replace the Hilton Head first-time checklist, things to do, or area facts for renters.
Quick answer
From October through March, the Town of Hilton Head Island allows dogs on the beach at any time, on a leash or under voice control. Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge is open sunrise to sunset with no restrooms or drinking water, and dogs are not allowed there. Check 511SC before you drive. We do not invent brand packing lists, water temperatures or prices.
What to pack around the rental (not a brand list)
- Layers and a wind shell: for beach walks and bike rides on cooler days
- Water and snacks for refuge walks: Pinckney Island has no drinking water, and the first pond is about a 2-mile round trip on foot from the parking area
- Dog kit: a leash and waste bags. The town requires owners to remove pet waste from the beach
- House logistics: get the rental’s parking, bike and pet rules in writing
Dogs on Hilton Head beaches (official Town page)
From the Town of Hilton Head Island Animals on the Beach page (read October 30, 2026):
- October through March: dogs allowed on the beach at any time, on a leash or under voice control.
- April through the Thursday before Memorial Day: on a leash from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; on a leash or under voice control from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m.
- Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day: not allowed on the beach from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Always: remove pet waste, and do not let pets chase or harass wildlife. The town also says a new dog restriction near Fish Haul Creek will take effect once Town Council adopts the code change, and the area will be signed.
Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge (official FWS page)
From the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Pinckney Island visit page (read October 30, 2026):
- Hours: open daily, sunrise to sunset. The vehicle entrance is on US 278 between the two bridges to the island.
- No amenities: no on-site staff, restrooms, drinking water or shelter. Beyond the parking area you go on foot or by bike.
- No dogs: dogs and other pets are not allowed on refuge lands, trails or beaches.
Road checks: 511SC
For South Carolina roads to the island, including I-95 and US 278, check SCDOT’s 511SC before you leave (site checked October 30, 2026).
Rental filters that matter in winter
- The pet policy in writing, if your dog is coming for the off-season beach rules
- Heat notes, and whether a pool is heated if that matters to you (confirm with the host)
- Bikes or bike storage, and parking for every car in the group
- Map distance to the beach access, plantation gate or bridge you will use most
What you pack can depend on the home. If you have not booked yet, start with these Hilton Head Island pages; each lists only rentals whose own listing title or website mentions that feature: Hilton Head Island rentals with a pool (28), Oceanfront rentals in Hilton Head Island (9), Hilton Head Island condo rentals (14).
How to decide on BnB Search
- Open Hilton Head vacation rentals and filter by bedrooms, pets and amenities, then check map distance.
- Check the town and refuge rules for your plans before you book.
- Book on the property’s own site from the listing. We do not take booking fees.
