Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Beach Tent Rules
Quick answer
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach both run a Leave Only Footprints program, but they set different tent limits. On Gulf Shores public beaches, tents can be no larger than 7 by 7 feet and 4 feet tall unless they’re in the designated area at Gulf Place. Orange Beach allows up to 12 by 12 feet, but anything wider than 7 feet or taller than 4 feet must go north of the marker posts. In both cities, gear still on the beach an hour after sunset is removed and thrown away. These rules come from the two cities’ websites, which we checked on October 18, 2026.
Gulf Shores
- Size: tents and shelters larger than 7 feet by 7 feet and taller than 4 feet are not allowed on public beaches unless they are placed in the designated area at Gulf Place. The limit also covers frames, poles and guy lines left up without their covering.
- Private property: property owners may allow tents and shelters on private property north of the city’s pole markers.
- Umbrellas: the city recommends single-pole beach umbrellas.
- Removal: anything left on the beach from one hour after sunset until sunrise is removed and thrown away by beach patrol. Permitted beach services are the exception. Chairs, umbrellas, tents, coolers and toys can’t be set out before sunrise.

Orange Beach
- What counts as a tent: anything that touches the ground at more than one point.
- Size: tents or structures larger than 12 feet by 12 feet are not allowed. Anything wider than 7 feet or taller than 4 feet must go north of the Leave Only Footprints marker posts or flags.
- Corridors: designated travel and access corridors must stay clear at all times. Keep off the dunes.
- Removal: anything left on the beach one hour after sunset is removed and thrown away by beach patrol. Permitted beach services are the exception. The city’s FAQ says unattended gear from one hour after sunset until sunrise is treated as abandoned and will not be returned.
- Lodging rules: individual lodging properties and landowners may allow tents in designated areas during the day. Ask your host about the rules for your stretch of beach.

- Pack up nightly: plan to have everything off the sand within an hour of sunset.
- Ask the host: ask whether the property offers beach chair service or has a designated tent area.
This guide covers only the cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. On beaches outside their limits, ask your host or property manager which rules apply.
