Aspen and Vail Winter Ski Packing for a Rental Week
An Aspen or Vail ski week usually fails on wet gear, parking, and Colorado traction rules before it fails on forgetting a favorite sweater. This packing-and-rental guide helps you choose a pin on the Aspen and Vail hub, then book on the property’s own site. It does not replace the Aspen and Vail first-time checklist, the airports getting-there guide, or Aspen and Vail rental tips.
Quick answer
Pack for CDOT traction / chain law compliance, wet boots, and house recovery. Match an Aspen / Snowmass Village / Vail / Avon / Beaver Creek badge, filter fireplace or hot tub when those matter, and check COtrip.org before you leave the Front Range or the airport. During an active Passenger Vehicle Traction Law, CDOT requires qualifying 3/16″ tread all-weather or winter tires (mountain-snowflake or M+S / M/S) or that you carry chains or an approved alternative traction device; when the passenger vehicle chain law is active, every vehicle must have chains or an approved ATD (CDOT traction-law page read October 26, 2026). We do not invent brand packing lists or resort dress codes.
What to pack around the rental (not a brand list)
- Wet-gear plan: boot trays, dryer access, and space for jackets after storm days — confirm on the property site
- Chains or approved ATD: especially for 2WD rentals; Colorado State Patrol notes that upgrading to M+S alone does not bring a 2WD vehicle into traction-law compliance under the updated rules (CSP chain-law page read October 26, 2026)
- Layering for high-country swings: cold mornings and warm indoor condos; this page does not publish temperature ratings
- House logistics: grocery tote and kid/pet items if needed — dog rules are a separate path
CDOT traction and chain laws (official)
From CDOT’s Passenger Vehicle Traction and Chain Laws page (read October 26, 2026):
- Motorists are alerted to an active Traction Law or Chain Law by highway signage, COtrip.org, and traffic/roadway condition alerts.
- CDOT can implement traction and chain laws on any state highway. The page highlights Morrison to Dotsero on I-70 between September 1 and May 31 (or when conditions require).
- Passenger Vehicle Traction (PVT) Law: passenger vehicles need tires with 3/16″ tread depth rated “all weather” or winter tires (mountain-snowflake icon or M+S or M/S), or must carry chains or an approved alternative traction device. CDOT highly recommends AWD or 4WD in the mountains when possible.
- Passenger Vehicle Chain Law: during severe storms, every vehicle must have chains or an approved alternative traction device — described as the final safety measure before a highway closure.
- Fines (CDOT page): non-compliance includes a $100 fine and $33 surcharge; failing to comply with restrictions that result in a travel-lane closure can include a $500 fine and $157 surcharge.
Colorado State Patrol’s chain-law page adds drivetrain detail for passenger vehicles under 16,001 pounds GCWR/GVWR on I-70 between Dotsero (MP 133) and Morrison (MP 259) from September 1 through May 31 when the Passenger Vehicle Traction Law is active: 2WD vehicles must carry chains or an approved ATD in that season window, and when the law is active must install them on two or more drive tires (tire-only is not a 2WD option); 4WD/AWD may use qualifying 3/16″ tread mountain-snowflake, M+S / M/S, or all-weather tires, or chains/ATDs (CSP page read October 26, 2026). Check live COtrip messages the morning you drive — this guide does not republish today’s activations.
Lodging filters that change packing stress
Live hub areas include Aspen, Snowmass Village, Vail, Avon, and Beaver Creek. Amenity paths include condo, ski-in/ski-out, fireplace, hot tub, and pool. A ski-in badge is not a locker room — read boot storage and parking on the booking site.
- Fireplace / dryer language reduces wet-gear pileups after storm days
- Hot tub pins need honest outdoor access and house-rule checks in deep cold
- Aspen / Snowmass vs Vail / Avon / Beaver Creek changes airport and I-70 exposure
How to decide on BnB Search
- Open Aspen and Vail vacation rentals.
- Match the town badge, then parking for every vehicle.
- Add fireplace or hot tub filters only when recovery space matters.
- Confirm tire type and chains/ATD against current CDOT / CSP guidance and COtrip.
- Book on the property’s own site — BnB Search is a free directory, not a middleman.
What you pack can depend on the home. If you have not booked yet, start with these Aspen and Vail pages; each lists only rentals whose own listing title or website mentions that feature: Aspen and Vail rentals with a hot tub (14), Aspen and Vail rentals with a pool (10), Aspen and Vail condo rentals (13), Aspen and Vail ski-in/ski-out rentals (8), Aspen and Vail rentals with a fireplace (8), Pet-friendly Aspen and Vail listings (9).
FAQ
Does AWD mean I can skip carrying chains to Vail or Aspen?
Not as a blanket rule. Under CDOT’s Passenger Vehicle Traction Law, qualifying tires or carrying chains/ATDs can satisfy the requirement; under the passenger vehicle chain law, every vehicle must have chains or an approved ATD. CSP states that 2WD has no tire-only option when the traction law is active on the I-70 Dotsero–Morrison corridor. Check COtrip and your vehicle’s drivetrain before you leave (pages read October 26, 2026).
Is this the same as Park City or Tahoe packing?
No. Those pages cite Utah DOT or Caltrans rules. This page is Colorado CDOT / CSP traction and chain law around an Aspen–Vail rental pin.
Does BnB Search book the stay?
No. Compare on the hub, then finish on the site linked from the listing.
