Sedona Winter Packing for a Red Rock Week
A Sedona winter or shoulder week usually fails on Red Rock Pass confusion, forest-road gates, and desert-to-snow elevation swings before it fails on forgetting a layer. This packing-and-rental guide helps you choose a pin on the Sedona hub, then book on the property’s own site. It does not replace the Sedona first-time checklist, Sedona weather by month, or Sedona vs Page and Lake Powell.
Quick answer
Pack for a Red Rock Pass (or America the Beautiful where accepted), Coconino forest-road status, wet or cold trail layers, and AZ511 highway checks. Confirm trailhead parking rules on the Forest Service page, and treat Schnebly Hill–style climbs as possible desert-to-snow traps in winter. We do not invent trail rankings or brand packing lists.
What to pack around the rental (not a brand list)
- Layering: cool mornings, warm rock, and sudden wind — shoulder and winter weeks both swing
- Pass plan: printed confirmation or plate registration if you buy a Red Rock Pass online (see fees below)
- Trail day kit: water, sun protection, and footwear with grip for dusty or damp rock
- Elevation awareness: forest roads can start dry near town and end in deep snow higher up
- House logistics: grocery tote and kid/pet items if needed — dog rules are a separate path
Red Rock Pass and related fees (official)
From the Coconino National Forest Red Rock and Coconino Passes page (last updated June 17, 2026; read October 26, 2026):
- Red Rock Pass: Daily $5, Weekly $15, Annual $20. Cardholder must be present; covers everyone in the vehicle at Sedona-area Coconino fee sites that accept it.
- America the Beautiful (ATB): accepted in lieu of a Red Rock Pass at many Sedona-area forest sites; does not cover the concessionaire-managed sites that need the Coconino Hospitality pass.
- Coconino Hospitality sites (examples with daily fees on the page): Call of the Canyon / West Fork $15; Crescent Moon $15; Grasshopper Point $15; Beaver Creek Day Use $14; Lower Lake Mary Picnic Area $12. Red Rock / ATB are not accepted at those five.
- If you leave your vehicle at a fee site, you must have the correct pass. Red Rock Passes can be purchased at Recreation.gov (license plate recorded) or at site kiosks / Sedona Chamber / Red Rock Visitor Center (Daily and Weekly at the visitor center; not Annual).
- Red Rock State Park and Slide Rock State Park require Arizona State Park entrance fees — separate from Red Rock Pass.
Fee-free day-use dates for Coconino National Forest in 2026 are listed on the forest Passes page (includes winter weekends such as Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend January 17–19 and Presidents Day Weekend February 14–16, among others). Recheck that list before you assume a free day.
Winter forest roads (official)
From the Forest Service January 8, 2026 release on annual seasonal road restrictions and the Forest Roads Status page (read October 26, 2026):
- Each winter, Coconino National Forest restricts motor vehicles on many forest roads with gates to protect roads and reduce stranded visitors. Non-motorized use may remain allowed.
- Abide by posted signs and locked gates; avoid saturated open roads.
- Elevation changes matter: roads may begin in desert conditions and end in deep snow — the release cites Schnebly Hill Road as an example.
- Check Forest Roads Status before a back-road plan; status is updated by district as information becomes available.
Highway checks: AZ511
For interstate and state-route winter driving into Sedona (I-17, SR-89A, and related), use AZ511.gov for live Arizona road conditions before you commit to a drive day (page read October 26, 2026).
Rental filters that matter in winter and shoulder season
- Heat / fireplace notes for cool nights
- Washer/dryer after dusty trail days
- Honest parking and driveway notes near Uptown or Village of Oak Creek
- Map distance to trailheads that still accept your pass type
- Pet policy in writing when traveling with dogs — see pet-friendly Sedona
How to decide on BnB Search
- Open Sedona vacation rentals and filter bedrooms, pets, parking, and map distance to the trailheads or town pockets you want.
- Confirm Red Rock / ATB / Hospitality / State Park fee rules for the trailheads on your list.
- Check Forest Roads Status and AZ511 the morning of any mountain or forest drive.
- Book on the property’s own site — BnB Search is a free directory, not a middleman.
What you pack can depend on the home. If you have not booked yet, start with this Sedona page, which lists only rentals whose own listing title or website mentions that feature: Sedona rentals with a hot tub (13).
FAQ
Do I need a Red Rock Pass in winter?
If you leave a vehicle at a Sedona-area Coconino fee site that requires it, yes — unless a listed fee-free day applies or you use an accepted ATB pass. Concessionaire sites need their own Hospitality fee. Confirm on the Forest Service pass page.
Can I drive Schnebly Hill Road in winter?
Only if Forest Roads Status and on-the-ground gates allow it. The Forest Service warns that desert starts can end in deep snow on the same road. Do not invent a status — check the live page.
Where should I book?
Compare on BnB Search, then complete booking on the property’s own site.
