Lake Norman Facts for Rental Guests
Quick answer
Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina. It was formed by Duke Energy's Cowans Ford Dam on the Catawba River, has about 520 miles of shoreline and more than 32,000 acres of water, and touches four counties. On BnB Search, the Lake Norman vacation rentals hub lists 140 places; 115 of them are individual stays and the rest are rental companies, real estate offices and other local businesses. Sources are linked at the end.
The lake in numbers
- Largest man-made lake in North Carolina. NC State Parks, the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) and NC DEQ all describe it this way.
- Made by a dam. Work on Cowans Ford Dam on the Catawba River began on September 28, 1959, and the lake filled in 1963 (DNCR).
- Size. NC DEQ lists 32,510 surface acres and 520 miles of shoreline. Other sources round to "more than 32,000 acres".
- Four counties. Catawba, Iredell, Lincoln and Mecklenburg (DNCR).
- Name. It is named for Norman Atwater Cocke, who led Duke Power (DNCR).
- Full pond. 760 feet above mean sea level (NC DEQ).
Why this matters for renters: with this much shoreline, "on Lake Norman" covers very different settings, from main-channel water to quiet coves. A listing title alone won't tell you which one you're getting, so ask the host about the water in front of the house.
Lake Norman State Park
The state park sits on the lake's northern shore at 759 State Park Road, Troutman, in Iredell County. According to NC State Parks:
- The park covers about 17 miles of the lake's northern shoreline.
- Day use is free. Boat rentals, swim passes, camping, some event permits and facility reservations have fees.
- The park has a lake swim beach and bathhouse, picnic shelters, a visitor center, and the Itusi mountain bike trail system.
- Pets are allowed on a leash of 6 feet or less, but not on the swim beach, inside buildings or in camper cabins.
Check the park's official page for current hours, fees and closures before you go.

Before you book a Lake Norman rental
- Dock and swim access: ask whether the dock is private or shared, and whether you can swim from it.
- Boats: if you plan to bring or rent a boat, ask about slip space, trailer parking and the nearest ramp.
- Pool: ask whether the pool is private or a community pool. Condo titles often mean shared.
- Pets: confirm the pet policy and fees with the host. The state park's swim beach does not allow pets.
- Companies vs homes: a company page on BnB Search is one listing for a business that manages many homes. Book a specific home on the company's own site.
