Big Bear Winter Packing for a Rental Week

A Big Bear winter week starts with the drive up the mountain. Caltrans can post chain controls on short notice, and you can be cited for not following them. This guide helps you choose a pin on the Big Bear hub, then book on the property’s own site. It does not replace the Big Bear first-time checklist or the Big Bear winter ski weekend guide.

Quick answer

Carry chains that fit your tires, and know which wheels drive your car. Check chain controls and closures on Caltrans QuickMap, or call (800) 427-7623, before you leave. Pack water, food, blankets and extra clothes in case of a long delay. For Forest Service day-use fee sites, the San Bernardino National Forest sells Adventure Passes, including digital day passes. We do not invent brand packing lists, snow totals or prices.

Chain control rules worth knowing

Before you leave, check Caltrans QuickMap for live chain controls, closures and cameras, or call the Caltrans Highway Information Network at (800) 427-7623.

Forest day-use fees (official SBNF page)

From the San Bernardino National Forest passes page (read October 30, 2026): the Adventure Pass covers more than 100 day-use fee sites in southern California, digital day passes are sold, and the Recreation.gov app’s Scan & Pay works offline at fee sites. America the Beautiful interagency passes also cover standard day-use fees. Check the fee rules for each trailhead or site you plan to use.

Rental filters that matter in winter

  1. Open Big Bear vacation rentals and filter by bedrooms, pets and amenities, then check map distance.
  2. Check QuickMap and the forecast on travel day before you head up.
  3. Book on the property’s own site from the listing. We do not take booking fees.
