Smith Mountain Lake Vacation Rental Tips
Almost all Smith Mountain Lake listings on BnB Search are tagged Huddleston or Moneta, which are in Bedford County, Virginia. The county’s short-term rental ordinance has a parking rule that matters on a lake trip: boats and trailers have to stay on the lot. Use Smith Mountain Lake rentals to shortlist, then book on the property site. This page does not replace the first-time checklist.
Quick answer
Bring only as many cars, boats and trailers as the lot holds. Bedford County Zoning Ordinance Sec. 30-100-18 (read October 30, 2026) requires every guest vehicle, boat and trailer to park on the rental’s lot, and bans parking in, along or on the side of roads at any time. A management plan with the number of permitted guests and the parking information is posted inside. We do not rank managers or invent fees.
Bedford County rules that affect guests
From Bedford County Zoning Ordinance Sec. 30-100-18, Short-term rentals:
- Parking. All guest vehicles, boats and trailers park on the rental’s lot. In multifamily buildings, boats and trailers go only in spaces reserved for that unit. No parking in, along or beside roads at any time.
- Posted plan. A property management plan is posted in a visible spot and included with the rental contract. It covers the number of permitted guests, parking, trash, local contacts within 50 miles who respond to complaints, and where the fire extinguisher and smoke detectors are.
- Safety. At least one ABC fire extinguisher in a visible spot such as the kitchen or hallway, smoke detectors in every bedroom, and one on each floor including the basement.
- Bedrooms in the ad. If the home is on a septic system, ads must match the bedroom count on its Virginia Department of Health septic permit.
These rules cover Bedford County. Parts of the lake shore are in Franklin and Pittsylvania counties, which have their own rules, so read the pin and the booking site.
