Outer Banks First-Time Visitor Checklist
A first Outer Banks trip is an order of checks, not a ranking of towns. Outer Banks vacation rentals on BnB Search are a free directory of beach houses and cottages. Shortlist on the map, then book on the property site. The towns guide is the filter map. The beach house checklist covers beds, parking, and house rules. This page is the first-trip checklist. It does not replace those guides, Outer Banks vs Myrtle Beach, or the things to do list.
Quick answer
Filter the hub badge, then read the pin. The live directory areas are Corolla, Duck, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Hatteras, and Ocracoke. “Unknown” is not a town. Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores are named in the towns guide and are not hub buttons. Cape Hatteras National Seashore does not charge an entrance fee (NPS fees page, read October 26, 2026). The Hatteras–Ocracoke vehicle ferry is free and first come, first served with no reservations (NCDOT Ferry reservations page, read October 26, 2026). Before you plan a Hatteras Island stay, check NCDOT: it said N.C. 12 would reopen at Pea Island on October 29, 2026, as a one-lane detour with alternating traffic (NCDOT release, read October 30, 2026). We do not rank a base.
Six labels, in the order you click them
- Decide whether the pin’s badge is Corolla, Duck, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Hatteras, or Ocracoke. If it is not, you are in Unknown or looking at a name that is not a button.
- Do not treat the badge list as a town description. The towns guide already says existing posts name these labels and stop. Read the pin.
- Hatteras is one filter for many village names on Hatteras Island. Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Rodanthe are not separate hub buttons.
- Ocracoke is its own filter. Reaching it usually means a ferry. Confirm the route and schedule on NCDOT before you lock dates.
- A hub label is not a promise that the house is oceanfront. Check the map and the listing before you deposit.
- If you already know the manager, leave the town filter and open the companies guide.
Names that are not buttons
Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores appear in the towns guide as places people search. They are not live hub filters. Manteo and Roanoke Island are not Outer Banks hub buttons either. If a card says one of those names, read the pin’s area badge and the map. Do not invent a filter that is not on the hub.
Ferry and park facts to confirm before you pay
- Hatteras–Ocracoke vehicle ferry. NCDOT’s reservations page says this route is free, first come, first served, and does not require or accept reservations. Schedules change for weather and mechanical issues.
- Cedar Island–Ocracoke and Swan Quarter–Ocracoke. NCDOT accepts reservations up to 90 days ahead and recommends them in busy season. Claim a reservation at least 30 minutes before departure.
- Ocracoke Express passenger ferry. NCDOT’s passenger-ferry page lists the 2026 season as Mondays through Saturdays, May 5 through September 7, with no Sunday service; round-trip fare $15 per person, children 3 and under free, $1 for a bicycle. That page also says passenger service is scheduled to resume in May 2027 after the 2026 season. Confirm before you plan.
- Cape Hatteras National Seashore. NPS says there is no entrance fee. Fees apply for camping, lighthouse climbs, and ORV permits. ORV permits are sold only on recreation.gov (no in-person sales). The fees page says Cape Hatteras Lighthouse climbing is currently closed and will likely not open in 2026 due to restoration; outdoor areas near the lighthouse stay open. Bodie Island climb fees are listed separately when climbing is offered.
- Hatteras Island road access. NCDOT said N.C. 12 would reopen at Pea Island on October 29, 2026, as a one-lane detour. Check NCDOT for delays before you drive south of the Marc Basnight Bridge. Our things to do guide carries the last recheck date.
- Beach parking by town. Rules differ by town. Use the beach parking guide rather than guessing from a hub badge.
Companies are not towns
A company office pin is not the same as a town filter. Compare managers in the companies guide only after you know which hub badge matches the house.
How this differs from the other Outer Banks pages
The towns guide explains the six filters. The beach house checklist is about the house itself. Things to do and restaurants are separate lists with their own source dates. This page is only the first-trip order of checks.
If a feature is a must-have, build your shortlist from these Outer Banks pages; each lists only rentals whose own listing title or website mentions that feature: Pet-friendly Outer Banks listings (14), Outer Banks rentals with a hot tub (22), Outer Banks rentals with a pool (27), Oceanfront rentals in Outer Banks (16), Outer Banks condo rentals (10), Outer Banks rentals with a game room (9).
FAQ
Which Outer Banks area should I pick?
We do not publish an area ranking. Use the filter that matches the stretch of the Banks and the drive you already want, then read the pin.
Is Kitty Hawk the same filter as Kill Devil Hills?
No. Kill Devil Hills is a hub button. Kitty Hawk is not. The towns guide already says so.
Is Avon its own area on BnB Search?
No. Avon sits under the Hatteras filter with other Hatteras Island village names.
Do I need a ferry reservation for Hatteras to Ocracoke?
Not for the free Hatteras–Ocracoke vehicle ferry. NCDOT says that route does not take reservations. Other Ocracoke routes and the seasonal passenger ferry have different rules—check NCDOT.
Is there an entrance fee for Cape Hatteras National Seashore?
No. NPS lists the seashore as entrance fee-free. Other activity fees still apply.
Does BnB Search book the stay?
No. Compare on the hub, then finish on the site linked from the listing.
