Lake Travis Winter Packing for a Cabin Week
A Lake Travis winter or shoulder week usually fails on cash-only park entry, seasonal park closures, and lake-level ramp cutoffs before it fails on forgetting a fleece. This packing-and-rental guide helps you choose a pin on the Lake Travis hub, then book on the property’s own site. It does not replace the Lake Travis first-time checklist, weather by month, or Lake Travis vs Smith Mountain Lake.
Quick answer
Pack for Travis County park day-use fees (cash only at Pace Bend and Mansfield Dam), sunrise-to-civil-twilight hours, TPWD year-round vs winter-closed access notes, LCRA lake-level checks before you trailer a boat, and DriveTexas road status on RR 620 / Texas 71 approaches. We do not invent marina rankings or brand packing lists.
What to pack around the rental (not a brand list)
- Layers: Hill Country mornings stay colder than the Austin forecast high, especially on open water
- Cash for park entry: Travis County entrance booths at Pace Bend and Mansfield Dam accept cash only (no credit or debit)
- Boat day kit: confirm ramp usability against the current Lake Travis elevation before you leave the cabin
- House logistics: tote for supplies and kid/pet items — confirm the rental’s pet and parking notes in writing
Travis County parks on Lake Travis (official)
From Travis County Parks Pace Bend Park (page read October 26, 2026):
- Park hours every day sunrise to civil twilight; new entries close about 30 minutes before civil twilight
- Day use $5 per person ($3 seniors 62+; children 12 and under free); cash only at the entrance booth
- Collier ramp listed open 24 hours; Tatum and Tournament Point follow posted boat-ramp hours (Tournament Point noted closed on the park page when we read it)
From Travis County Parks Mansfield Dam Park (page read October 26, 2026): day-use fees match Pace Bend ($5 / $3 seniors / kids free) and entry is cash only. Recheck any burn-ban banner before you plan charcoal or wood fires.
Texas Parks and Wildlife access notes
From Texas Parks and Wildlife Lake Travis Access (page read October 26, 2026):
- Pace Bend / Collier Cove and Pace Bend / Tatum Cove: fee required, open all year, operated by Travis County Parks
- Mansfield Dam Park: fee required; ramp operated by Travis County Parks
- Tom Hughes Park: day use with seasonal hours; closed Dec. 1–Jan. 31
- Several LCRA recreation areas on the same TPWD list are also marked open all year with a fee — confirm the operating agency before you drive
LCRA lake levels before a boat day
Lake Travis ramp usability depends on elevation. Use LCRA Hydromet for the current Lake Travis level before you trailer in (page read October 26, 2026). Recheck LCRA’s published boat-ramp minimums for the specific ramp you plan — levels change, and flood closures can close recreation on short notice.
Highway checks: DriveTexas (TxDOT)
For Texas approaches into the lake (RR 620, Texas 71, RM 2222, and related), use DriveTexas.org for live road conditions before you commit to a drive day (page read October 26, 2026). TxDOT also publishes winter driving tips at its snow and ice page for rare Central Texas ice events.
Rental filters that matter in winter and shoulder season
- Heat notes for cool lake nights and morning fog
- Washer/dryer after muddy park or ramp days
- Honest driveway and parking notes (steep grades, trailer space)
- Map distance to Pace Bend, Mansfield Dam, or the cove pocket you want
- Pet policy in writing when traveling with dogs
What you pack can depend on the home. If you have not booked yet, start with these Lake Travis pages; each lists only rentals whose own listing title or website mentions that feature: Pet-friendly Lake Travis listings (9), Lake Travis rentals with a hot tub (9), Lake Travis rentals with a pool (27), Lakefront rentals in Lake Travis (26).
How to decide on BnB Search
- Open Lake Travis vacation rentals and filter bedrooms, pets, parking, and map distance to the park or cove you want.
- Confirm park hours, cash day-use fees, and ramp status for any day-use plan before you book.
- Book on the property’s own site from the listing — we do not take booking fees.
